Most believe it was formed by an earthquake in the early 1800s, and the landscape it created looks less like anything in Texas and more like the Florida Everglades. Ancient bald cypress trees rise out of still, dark water draped in Spanish moss. Alligators move through the shallows. Birds explode out of the treeline. And every fall, the whole thing turns — green to yellow to rust — in a ten-day window that draws photographers from around the world.
There is nothing else like it within three hours of Dallas and Fort Worth. Which is exactly the point.
